Well, the skull that scared Ciara is done. Or about 95 percent so. Here she is hanging up and drying, but I had to reinforce the head and am reinforcing the bottom where all the candy will sit when it's hanging up, full. Mike bought half-price candy today and now it's all stuffed up and drying, ready for Saturday.

Ciara is ignoring it for now. She has a rawhide chew.

Also: The mag is going national tomorrow! Well, it's been national but now we'll have day-and-date on this side of the Mississippi. Which is a big deal.

I'm hoping to blog and do a little snarking, a little illumination, a little funny on the new development (now that I'll be able to see it the day it comes out) every day, over here at Past Deadline. Come on over and check us out, first thing, every morning!

What I really need now is a good title for the column.

These were harder to do than they looked!

But tasty, too. My fingers are all multicolored and smudged from where the icing melted a bit there.

Anyway, as promised back here, with the Mandala O' Candy (sounds like a porn name) I have now designed several cupcakes for tomorrow's gathering. (The big gathering remains on Saturday.)

Some ideas worked better than others; I really like the little ghost-with horns on this last photo (you can't see it at the right angle) but once I put the tupperware lid on the top, he got squashed. And I have no idea how any of these will travel tomorrow from work and then to Brooklyn. We shall see.

Credit where it's due: Much inspiration (and candy ideas) from here. I hope to make the little Frankensteins at the bottom of the page with fondant later, but I don't know if that'll work....

Getting ahead with Ciara

I've been working on a Dia de los Muertos skull pinata for Saturday's party. It's a paper mache thing, and it's still got the balloon inside keeping it filled, so I dangle it upside down while it's drying from the latest coat of gluewater.

Ciara has finally taken notice.

You can't tell it from the video, but she was low-growling at it most of the evening, and making little soft whoofy noises at it. This from a dog that never does that kind of thing.

I call that an effective Halloween device, if it's not even done and it's scaring the pets.

Went out shopping for Halloween candy today. (Dylan's has all the best stuff. Gummy brains!) Not the prepackaged stuff; kids don't come to my neighborhood. No, no, the candy to put on top of the Halloween cupcakes I will be making closer to the date. And then I felt arty about it all.
